What to Wear
Simplicity is best. Children can become overwhelmed and lost in complicated clothing.
And comfort is an important component in creating a relaxed, fun experience.
A few, general things to keep in mind. Solid colors are ideal. Clothing with logos, cartoon characters, and strong contrast such as plaids are distracting. You may prefer to have a few outfit options, Karen will happily wait if you choose to change wardrobe for a different look.
Infants are sweetest photographed in their bare skin…either a cloth diaper or their birthday suit. Parents should wear black to blend into the background and allow the baby to be the focus of the picture.
Older children can handle more color and some texture such a favorite fuzzy sweater.
If you are including family groups, then consider having a simple color palet that reflects your personal style. Karen will consult with you based on your family size, time of year, and child’s age.
Location
Photographs are taken on location either in your home or a favorite outdoor spot like a park or beach. Children are more comfortable in familiar surroundings.
Time of Day
For outdoor portraits, early morning (starting no later than 9 am) and late afternoon/early evening (starting after 4 pm). Mid-day sun is unflattering, although a large shade tree can create a nice setting.
For indoor, natural light portraits, mid-morning to mid-afternoon is best. Rooms with strong sunlight streaming through the windows and doors are ideal.
Most importanly, let’s select a time when the children are well rested and fed. Have some of their favorite snacks available that won’t leave signs on their clothing or teeth (best to avoid Oreo cookie smiles).
Be Ready With
Have a cherished doll or stuffed animal, a favorite toy, or sporting equipment (ball, golf clubs) on hand. They allow your child to interact with me while showing the different aspects of their personality.
